Continuing the discussion of the immune system from the acidophilus page, it should be noted that vitamin deficiencies are also frequently suspected as contributing factors in canker sore formation.
Assuming there are either pathogenic components to canker sores, it makes sense to bolster our immune systems in every way we can to fight these ubiquitous invaders. Autoimmune disorders can be helped with vitamin intake as well.
Everything you put in your mouth has an effect on your body (and hence, your immune system),either positive or negative. The goal then, is to minimize the negative and maximize the positive.
Good Stuff In, Mouth Sores Out
This means increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, and decreasing your intake of typical American fare: coffee and donuts, fried anything, soda pop, candy bars, alcohol and various other junk food.
Sugar in most forms, if consumed excessively (which is pretty easy to do as most of us know), is particularly nasty because it stresses the immune system directly by causing insulin insensitivity, and indirectly by feeding the bad bacteria in the intestines.
Many nutritionists will tell us, however, that getting all the vitamins and nutrients we need from our food is difficult at best. Which means vitamin supplements are needed to make up the difference.
Of particular value to canker sore prevention are B vitamins.
